Password protect a PDF
Lock a PDF so it asks for a password before it opens.
Checking your plan…
How do I put a password on a PDF?
Open FilesAll's Password protect PDF, add your PDF, type a password twice and press Protect PDF. FilesAll locks the file with strong AES-256 encryption, so it asks for that password in any PDF reader. It all happens in your browser, so the file and the password never leave your device. This tool is part of FilesAll Pro.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if I forget the password?
Nobody can open the locked file, not even FilesAll, because the password is never sent or saved anywhere. Keep your original file, or write the password down in a safe place.
Will the locked PDF open on other devices?
Yes. It opens in Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview on a Mac or iPhone, and the browsers Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Each one asks for the password first.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The file is locked inside your browser, on your own device. The password and the file are never uploaded, and the password is forgotten when you close the tab.
Can I change the password on a PDF that already has one?
Yes. Add the PDF and type the new password. FilesAll asks for the current password first, then saves the file with the new one.
Can I take the password off later?
Yes. Use Unlock PDF and type the password once. You get a copy that opens without a password.
Is FilesAll free?
Yes. You can use FilesAll free every day without signing up, and the tool shows how many free files you have left today. A free account gives you more each day, and Pro removes the daily limit.
Do I need to install anything?
No. FilesAll works in the web browser you already have, on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android. There is nothing to install, and you do not need an account to start.
Are my files uploaded?
No. FilesAll does all the work inside your browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to our servers or anyone else's, and they disappear when you close the tab.
